What does the new ETIAS rule mean for St. Kitts & Nevis passport holders?

As of 2022 holders of passports that allow visa-free entry into the Schengen Area are required to obtain a new type of travel authorization dubbed ETIAS. One of those passports just happens to be that of St. Kitts and Nevis’s, and if you are currently a holder of that passport, or are thinking to obtain it through investment, we will take you through the basics of this new, and frankly outstanding, new regulation.

ETIAS rules for Saint Kitts and Nevis citizens

Saint Kitts and Nevis citizens can travel to Europe without applying for an entry permit, thanks to the visa waiver agreement between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the EU. However, visa-free travel to Europe will undergo a change by the end of 2022 when the European Union implements the new system; the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

ETIAS for Citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis

The ETIAS travel authorization for Europe is a new system that is being developed by the European Union. It is part of an integrated EU intelligence initiative with a common goal; fighting against terrorism and preventing the entry of individuals that may pose a risk to the safety and wellbeing of European citizens and improving the security within the Schengen member nations.

Currently, there are no visa requirements for St Kitts and Nevis citizens for entry into Europe, as the St. Kitts & Nevis passport includes travel to Europe from St Kitts passport’s visa-free countries list. From the end of 2022, the ETIAS travel authorization for Europe is a required security permit that will allow a Kittitian and Nevisian traveler to enter all of the Schengen member nations.

Traveling to Europe from Saint Kitts and Nevis

Once the Kittian or Nevisian nationals are ready to board a flight or ship headed towards the Schengen Area, they will be required to present their valid passport and have the obligatory ETIAS. Airline carriers and other transportation companies will be held responsible and asked to verify that all passengers, including Kittitians and Nevisians, have the appropriate documentation before boarding.

Any holder of St Kitts passport for travel to Europe—like all other ETIAS eligible citizens— will be prescreened once they have submitted the online application form and paid the fee of 7 Euros, except if they are aged below 18 or above 70 in which case they are exempt of the fee. Their data will be checked against multiple security databases such as:

  • SIS
  • VIS
  • Eurodac
  • Europol
  • Interpol

If no red flags are raised their ETIAS will be automatically approved within the first 24 hours after their application.

Should the application require manual processing because the data received an alert within the automated ETIAS revision the traveler may have to wait for up to two to three business days to receive a reply.

Although most applications for an ETIAS from Saint Kitts and Nevis should be approved in 24 hours, it is best to apply at least three business days before your trip. By doing you so you will have enough processing time in case you are required to provide additional information.

ETIAS Application for Kittitian Or Nevisian citizens visiting the Schengen Area

Obtaining an ETIAS from Saint Kitts and Nevis will be much simpler than a traditional Schengen visa.

The visa waiver document can be easily obtained online by completing an ETIAS application form with the traveler’s personal and passport information, including:

  • Full name
  • Nationality
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number
  • Issue date and country of passport
  • Passport expiry date

Next the applicant will be asked to provide some basic travel details such as:

  • Intended date of entry to Europe
  • Schengen member state of first intended entry

Applicants need to provide their contact details to receive updates regarding their ETIAS application. A valid email address and mobile phone number are also required.

Once the ETIAS is approved the national will receive an electronic copy of the travel document for their reference and travel purposes.

Please note that the personal and passport information introduced by Saint Kitts and Nevis national must coincide with the data on their passports.

Finally, the ETIAS form for Saint Kitts and Nevis will require applicants to answer some simple questions regarding security and health.

ETIAS visa requirements for passport holders of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis applying for an ETIAS travel authorization for Europe need to have the following requirements to fill out their form:

  • A current passport of Saint Kitts and Nevis valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of exit from the Schengen Area
  • A valid email address
  • A valid credit or debit card to pay for the ETIAS online processing fees

Since the ETIAS can be obtained entirely online from Saint Kitts and Nevis, there is no need to present any paper documents at a European consulate or embassy.

Once the application is processed the applicant will receive the ETIAS in digital format by email.

Once approved the ETIAS travel authorization will be valid for three years or as long as the St Kitts passport is valid, whichever is sooner. Should the citizen’s passport expire before the three years, the ETIAS will be rendered null, and the citizen will have to apply for a new ETIAS using the details of his new passport.

The ETIAS allows Kittitian or Nevisian nationals to stay in Europe for up to 90 days per 180-day period. The rule means that they may stay for a total of 90 days in the Schengen Area. Once the 90-day stay is up, they will have to exit the Schengen Area for the following 90 days to be, once more, granted a new 90-day stay.
