Argentina will grant citizenship for a $350,000 contribution to the Treasury or the purchase of an $800,000 government bond, Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Cabinet Chief Diego Santilli announced at Argentina Week in Paris on 2 October 2026. Applications are due to open in the last quarter of 2026, but the government has given no opening date and has published no application rules or list of eligible countries.
Ordinary naturalisation in Argentina requires two years of residence; the investment route has no residence requirement.
What is still unknown?
The 2025 decrees behind the programme bar no nationality; the government says checks will include a jurisdictional risk assessment but names no countries.
In June 2026 two Argentine appeal courts ruled, in individual cases, against the 2025 decree behind the investment route. The government treats the decree as still in force and said it would appeal to the Supreme Court, La Nación reported; no ruling had been published by 2 October.
How much will it cost?
The $350,000 contribution goes to the Treasury and is not refunded. The $800,000 goes into a government bond created for the programme. Caputo called it a zero-interest bond; Bloomberg Línea reports a seven-year term. The government has not said whether the money is repaid when the bond matures.
Each family member will add a Treasury contribution: $100,000 for a spouse or for an unmarried, childless child aged 18 to 25, and $25,000 for each child under 18. In the government's example, a family of four (main applicant, spouse, and two children under 18) would pay $500,000. How family members are added to the bond route has not been announced.
All payments will have to go through regulated financial institutions.
How will applicants be checked?
Applications will go to the Citizenship by Investment Programmes Agency, a body within the Ministry of Economy. Applicants will be checked on their identity, the source of their money and the route it took, their assets, their criminal record and reputation, and their migration history. The agency then sends its recommendation to the National Migration Directorate, which has 30 working days to approve or refuse the application.
What does the passport offer?
The Argentine passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 169 destinations, according to the Henley Passport Index for 2026. Argentina allows dual citizenship and does not ask applicants to give up the one they hold. Argentine citizenship itself cannot later be renounced.
